William E. Hyde, Patrolman for the Pennsville Police Department, met with an untimely death when he was shot while answering a call for a domestic disturbance.  During the early morning hours of September 9, 1962, Patrolman Hyde was called to a residence on Supawna Road for a disturbance.  As he stood at the front door, a male occupant discharged a shotgun through the door ending Patrolman Hyde's life.  The attacker was arrested and served out a life sentence in the New Jersey State Prison system.

William Hyde's name has taken its place of honor on the memorial wall at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.  The memorial is located at Judiciary Square, on E Street, between 4th and 5th Streets, NW, Washington D.C.
