Please do not ask to be put on the mailing list unless you have your 60 college credits by December prior to the year you will be hoping to attend the academy. for example, if you would be applying for classes in 2003, you will need your 60 college credits by December 2002.

 Booking Clerk

The Booking Clerk program was developed when the police department switched over to County Dispatch. There was a need to have manpower at the police station to assist the arresting officer during the arrest process. In the past full-time dispatchers were present in the station and they assisted with some of the arrest processing. With the booking clerk present the police officer has an assistant to fingerprint, photograph and keep a watchful eye on the suspect while the officer prepares the paperwork. At the same time the booking clerk makes the necessary computer checks to determine if the suspect is wanted. During that time the booking clerk also answer the telephones and wait on persons that come to the police department for assistance.

Booking Clerks are criminal justice students with at least 60 credit hours towards a Bachelor of Science degree. They must maintain a passing grade average to maintain their position with the department.
They are scheduled four hours per day plus call in for arrest processing however their schedule is flexible with college classes taking priority. When a booking clerk graduates from college they are expected to start pursuing a career in law enforcement. There services with the police department are terminated and they are given as much support as possible in achieving employment.
Since its inception, the Township of Pennsville has employed six booking clerks. Of the six, three are presently working in law enforcement, three decided to pursue other careers and one is presently working at the police department. Both booking clerks that moved on to other law enforcement employment have praised the program with giving them insight into a career in law enforcement and helped prepare them for the academy and the job. It has been a worthwhile program that has benefited both the criminal justice student and the police department.
If you are currently attending a local college, and you are enrolled in the criminal justice program, and you are interested in the Booking Clerk Program, please contact the chief of police at:
